A quick History of St Valentine’s Day
Valentine’s day, a day celebrating the Christian St Valentine happens on the 14th of February every year apart from in Orthodox religions where it is celebrated later in the year.
There are many origin stories as to his life and martyrdom. But the most agreed upon is that he signed a note “your Valentine” which lead to the tradition of anonymous Valentine’s cards signed as such.
In the 14th Century it was first associated with romantic love supposedly due to the movement of love birds at this time of year but it wasn’t until the 18th Century-a long time after the saint’s death- when the day became associated with sending flowers and cards to “your Valentine”.
In modern times it is seen as day for romantic partners to celebrate with restaurant dates and exchange expensive gifts.
Galentines day, a day to celebrate all the ladies in your life, is now becoming more widespread and is celebrated on the 13th.
