What are the best shoes to pack for a Disney holiday?

The best shoes to pack for an active trip

The best shoes to pack for a holiday is a difficult decision. Generally, on holidays I go on, my feet get a workout, so comfortable shoes are very important!

A Disney holiday in particular involves miles and miles of walking and that’s why the right shoes are so important.

Things to consider for the best shoes to pack

Comfort or Looks?

What shoes do you pack and wear when you are going on holiday?

Shoes that look pretty or feel good? Or do you have the holy grail of both in one pair?

Take a Disney holiday for example. People have lots of strong opinions about the best Disney shoes. Converse sparks controversy-ultimate comfort and ease or the cause of sore feet and blisters.

What shoes do you wear at home?

Personally I wear slip on canvas style shoes most of the time. So I find these comfy for Disney holidays.

I pack several pairs of shoes so I can change at least daily, go for cute prints and take a comfort insole-scholl make the best!

For our most recent Disney Trip I invested in a pair of Skechers with comfort soles and wow these were so much more comfortable. I still took two different pairs of canvas shoes which I wore on alternative days especially as the trainers were both new and new to me. But I did really love them! I purposefully picked a neat, slip on design so the shoes were slim and neat but still with that chunky comfy sole!)

However I know family members who prefer walking sandals or chunky trainers. However I don’t wear these at home so wearing different shoes just because you are on holiday seems risky to me.

I even know of one family member who lives in flip flops (something I find incredibly uncomfortable) but if that’s what you are used to then it could work in a holiday situation for you.

How they look affects how you feel

Don’t forget how they look though. Pick clean shoes that you like the look of, after all you will see them for years to come in your holiday photos!

Holiday and travel is not really the time to try and be someone you aren’t. Stick with what you know, what you find comfortable in. Not what you think you should find comfortable.

However that doesn’t mean you can’t try new things, new shoes etc just make sure you do it for the right reasons and before your holiday hits as well!

So what are the best shoes to pack?

The best shoes to pack are

  • Comfortable
  • Hard wearing
  • Good Condition
  • Look good
  • Pack easily (for options!)
  • Shoes you are used to

How many pairs of shoes?

You might be happy with just one perfect pair but if not here are some great ideas of options.

A pair for walking

Going to Disney, any theme park or a holiday where you will be doing a lot of exploring you will be walking miles a day so suitable walking shoes which are comfortable and hard wearing are essential to pack. Here comfort is more important than looks. These could be trainers, walking sandals, slip on shoes or even walking boots.

A pair for dinner/best

If you are planning on a nice dinner out on holiday then a nice pair of shoes-whether it’s a neat, clean version of your day shoes (you can always wear them after) or a smart pair of shoes can be a good idea if it makes you feel “special”. As long as your weight limit can allow it.

Slip on shoes/Poolside

Slip on shoes (something like flip flops or sliders) are generally a good idea whether you are heading pool side or not.

So many times you’ll find in your hotel that you just want to pop somewhere and slip on shoes are perfect for that. They are also generally light so easy to slip into luggage. If you are planning on wearing around the resort consider whether you normally wear socks or not as flip flops wont work for you! I wear sports crocs for this and also wear them on flights to stop swollen feet from laces and easy shoe removal if needed.

Slippers

Also along these lines if we are staying in a hotel which has multiple rooms or an apartment or plan on spending lots of time in the room then slippers make the world of difference.

Not trudging dirt through your room or ruining socks on the floor is such a help. Plus after an action packed day there is something so wonderful about the squishieness of slippers to soothe your feet. We each have a small slip on pair (Disney themed) which we bought for Disney 2018 as we were staying in a suite (Saratoga and Art of Animation). We have since washed these and kept these clean and safe as official ‘holiday slippers’. If you think you won’t need slippers then I recommend taking at least slipper socks or a pair of fluffy socks-just in case!

Best shoes to pack list

My shoe packing list for two weeks is…

  • 1x removable/moveable comfort insoles
  • 2/3 x walking shoes. This way you can rotate shoes if you do a lot of walking-in Disney you will do miles and miles everyday.
  • 1 x slip on shoes (sandals, slides or flip flops)
  • 1 x nice/smart shoes
  • 1 x slippers
  • Shoe bags to store your shoes in are also a great idea to keep your luggage and other packing clean!

I love to travel and pick up a tshirt from every magic location I visit! Suffering from a chronic illness travel isn't always too accessible but when I travel I always look for travel with extra magic!
