Viewing order for the How to Train Your Dragon saga

 With so much content its hard to know the viewing order for the How to Train Your Dragon saga. The 2010 film How to Train Your Dragon has spawned many sequels including further films, shorts tv shows and games.

Now in 2025 a How to Train Your Dragon land will open in Epic Universe Orlando. So now is the perfect time to catch up on all those shows!

Quick Reviews

How to train your dragon (2010) 10/10 

The original which sparked a dynasty of sequel films, shorts and TV shows. Quite action packed for a family film with a Viking setting full of fighting and sheep snatching dragons. (Features a dead parent pre film.) Very cute dragon and totally worth a watch. 

The full TV series follows between this film and the 2nd.

Whilst seeing the shorts helps with the progression of the films and explanations of events and characters the tv series is not required watching.

Short-Legend of the bone napper dragon (2010) 7/10

First short. Set after the first film. Gobber goes in search of a dragon said to be mythical and the gang goes along to help! Definitely gone down the comedy route with this short…

Short-Book of Dragons (2011) 6/10

Set from a first person perspective the book of dragons discusses the changes to the dragon bible and some backstory on different types of dragon. It has a different style of animation and feels like an old school DVD extra.   

Short-Gift of the Night fury (2011) 8/10

Festive short celebrating the winter holiday of Snoggletog, which also turns out to be Dragon baby season! Expect mishaps and baby dragons a plenty! 

Short-Dawn of the Dragon Racers (2015) 5/10

Awful animation and silly humour. A (long) short explaining the history of Dragon racing-which happens at the beginning of the next film. Meh. 

How to train your dragon 2 (2015) 6/10

Sequel film following on from the TV series (not watched) set 5 years after the first film. More magical but way more stressful. Full of irritating moments and annoying decisions from characters. (Features a parent returning and one dying. Neither listen. Features a lot of dragon death.) 

How to train your dragon 3 (2015) 8/10

Set a year after the events of the last film. This film features potentially the end of dragon human relations as a Night Fury hunter and a Light Fury battle to get to Toothless first. 

Short-How to train your Dragon: Homecoming (2019) 7/10 

Another festive short celebrating the holiday of Snoggletog set 10 years after the events of film 3. Strange animation but alot better than some of the other shorts.

A handful of inspiration
