Shazam! Review and bound look!
Today I stepped out of the Disney bubble to create a look based on a film I watched, and LOVED, recently-Warner Brothers Shazam!
Shazam! Movie Review
My Ratings
My star rating 5/5
Magic rating 4/5
Motion Sickness Rating 2/5 (think falling, flight scenes etc)
Grossness rating 1/5
Filming Locations
Shazam was set in Philadelphia but mostly filmed in Toronto!
Spoiler-free review
Shazam as we know from the advert features a run away, wannabe tough guy teenager. Who after defending his foster sibling gets transported by train to cave where he gains the powers of Shazam! From then on you can imagine the sort of antics which would ensue from two young teenagers having access to powers which makes one of them a super strong adult.
I felt the film was DC’s version of Marvel’s Deadpool but without the gross levels. It is very funny and engaging.
For me it was an unexpected beginning and there were plenty of unexpected twists. But it probably helped I knew nothing of the character (or film bar the trailer) before watching it. I wasn’t even fully aware of its immersion in the DC universe until watching the film.
Make sure to check out the end credits. There is definitely scope for a sequel or potential cross over. The credits themselves were also beautifully animated.
For me this was the best film in the current DC universe. Whilst Aquaman had beautiful artistry in its sets, costumes and, uhum, actors. I always feel like there are random leaps which make no sense. Shazam has a much better story and flow then all the other DC/Warner Brothers films I have watched.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods
A darker sequel came out in 2023.
Whilst I enjoyed this sequel to Shazam but felt it was much darker and generally not as good. It still had the humour but with more risk. Personally I’m not a fan of repeat villains.
I was also gutted that Black Adam (2022) could of had a cross over (they are wearing the same outfit!) and didn’t. Personally, I felt that Black Adam was a better film then given credit for at the time.
However I would choose to watch Shazam! again over either its sequel or Black Adam.
My Shazam Look
I loved the film so much I was inspired to create a bound influenced by it.
I went a bit further to have some fun with a dramatic makeup look and lightning bolt nails!
Whilst I wasn’t quite prepared to stretch to the full-on spandex costume but a red tshirt or bold graphic shirt works well for this character paired with the perfect accessories of gum and a mobile phone!
