Halloween Costume Ideas

It’s almost Halloween! Yay! I have decided to do a quick range of outfits you could use for Halloween with simple looks and makeup. So if you are after an easy, classic Halloween look then read on!

I like dressing up but I can’t stand wearing “proper” dressing up/fancy dress outfits which are made out of horrible material and generally unflattering.

Also I am a trained makeup artist but I much prefer doing makeup on other people because it’s easier and more fun. Also I’m generally allergic to life so it can be quite uncomfortable to wear too much or the wrong products! Generally, when doing theatrical style and dramatic makeup on myself I tend to use ‘normal’ products such as foundations and eye shadows rather than theatre makeup or even face paint just because I hate the heavy feel!

Here’s how I interpreted the characters through makeup and clothes.

Beetlejuice

Now I thought I’d start with something not Disney, but it is Tim Burton and as we all know Disney and Tim Burton are like two quarrelling lovers, on again, off again and totally obsessed with each other…

Betelguese is mad and messy.

Makeup wise think dead so pale skin with a touch of green and blue shading, dark black around the eyes-use eyeshadow instead of facepaint as his look is powdery and blurred not harsh or defined.

Clothes wise I found this amazing stripe coat on sale in New Look. Look for similar or a striped longline jacket/blazer. Unless you are going somewhere too warm to wear a coat what you wear underneath doesn’t matter too much. I picked up a dress covered in spiders and webs a couple of years ago which is perfect for such occasions! Team with black ankle boots and boom!

Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice!!!

Jack Skellington and Sally

The ultimate in Tim Burton Disney love birds. Jack and Sally! These make great costume ideas either singularly or with your partner/bestie!

Makeup wise Jack needs strong white and black forming a skull shape. Whilst with Sally blended green eye shadows with liner and face paint stitches. Be bold and obvious, these are based on stop motion characters not realism.

Clothes wise I paired a Jack Skellington print dress, from Lotus Leggings, with the same striped coat from New Look. For Sally, a Disney Parks t-shirt, with lotus leggings with Jack Skellington pattern topped with a ruffled black skirt. I finished the look with layered jewellery, a New Look stitch necklace and a polymer clay Oogie Boogie.

Coco

The Day of the Dead is a traditional Mexican holiday which has become a modern Halloween classic in the west. Something we have become obsessed with in recent years. Tread carefully here as cultural appropriation is a big no no.

But my take on the look is firmly inspired by the film Coco.

For the make-up I used face paint and took elements from the characters of Coco. I didn’t want to copy any particular look but I wanted it more Coco than average sugar skull/day of the dead.

Outfit wise I have this great vintage Chinese jacket with yellow flowers and a black ruffled skirt for that raggered edge. The colour yellow is important as the Marigold flower is an important part of the Day of the Dead as the smell is said to help guide souls home.

I’d finish up the look with some Poundland accessories including a head band and adorable bucket bags. Looking at what accessories are available to you is a great way to inspire a Halloween costume.

“Good Girl Gone Bad” Halloween Costume Inspiration

When I saw the theme Disney Good Girl Gone Bad for Colormemagic’s Halloween Costume challenge I knew I wanted to try and target a more unique, forgotten character and Faline, the female deer from Bambi, popped into mind.

I also found more, easier, inspiration in this theme such as the Disney Princesses Gone Bad

Faline From Bambi

For the makeup I didn’t want to go down the face paint route so I just painted the nose black and used false lashes for that deer vibe. I did not want her to look an aggressor or a victim, just somewhere in the grey in between. I decided that a cut on the face with bruised skin would have the most impact and created this with eye shadow and fake blood.

Hair wise I styled my hair up into a low quiff and then just messed it up a bit.

Clothes wise I decided to go with a punk-y style outfit with the idea being Faline on a bad night out. I paired a girly denim skirt with a Bambi top layered underneath a studded black top. I have a pair of Irregular choice heels-Prince of the Forest-which worked perfectly for the look.

Rapunzel

“Too weak to handle myself out there? Tell that to my frying pan!”-Rapunzel

I drew inspiration from the Disney film Tangled for this Halloween costume. Then went bad and bold with big lashes, messy hair and blood. Don’t mess with this Rapunzel.

For the makeup I took lilac and pink eye shadow shades to create the eye look going big and bold. I then put brown and red eye shadow on my fingers and streaked my face randomly and repeated this with fake blood.

To recreate any princess as a costume pick clothes that represent the block colours they wear. In Rapunzel’s case this is lilac.

Now you’ve read through hopefully you are feeling inspired to create your own costumes and this list of movies is a great place to start!

The Perfect Halloween Costume Finishing Touches

If you are looking for individual Halloween costume ideas why not make your own finishing touches?

Here are some pieces I’ve made using Polymer Clay which you shape by hand and then bake in the oven.

I created a range of Nightmare Before Christmas pieces as it’s not normally something found in the shops!

The best way I find is to google a few images of the item you want to create, perhaps from different angles, and then practise!

Remember to read the instructions on the packaging as each make of clay does vary!
