A visit to Algwen Cabin, Norfolk

Sharing is caring!

Cosy up in this dog-friendly self-catering cottage in rural Norfolk

A relaxing stay at Algwen Cabin, a holiday cottage in rural Norfolk.

We recently treated ourselves to a stay in the newly launched Algwen Cabin after our recent domestic troubles with Storm Babet.

What is Algwen Cabin like?

The cabin is a newly constructed wooden building set up for four adults. It features two bedrooms, one which has adult-sized bunk beds. There is parking out front for two and a secure garden at the back. There is a small kitchen which has everything you could need for a Holiday stay. As well as a beautiful bathroom. The owners live next door, including two of the four-legged variety.

Is the cottage dog-friendly?

The cabin is very dog-friendly. The owners welcomed our three with open arms (quite literally). Our dogs loved their stay, and their hosts. Bowls were provided as well as comfy dog beds which ours loved especially as they had the luxury of one each! There was even a small pile of toys to play with.

Where is Algwen Cabin located?

The cabin is located in a small rural Norfolk village roughly between the towns of Kings Lynn and Wisbech.

It is also conveniently the same time distance to my husband’s workplace as it is from home, meaning he can still work his normal week whilst enjoying the luxuries of showers and running water.

Where to visit near Algwen Cabin?

West Walton

West Walton is the closest big village which has a village hall and a really interesting church with a separate bell tower.

There are several signs and maps for a Jubilee Walk- a nice round circuit with a map taking in some of the old sea wall. But it was too muddy when we went.

We walked to West Walton but I don’t recommend walking from the property. It’s much better to park in the village. There were grass verges most of the way (30mins) but they were full of holes and rubbish. Especially cans and smashed glass so dangerous to walk or drive on.

Yus Kitchen is a nearby, nice enough Chinese takeaway which did a delicious veggie sweetcorn soup. Be aware it is cash only!

Wisbech, Cambridgeshire

A visit to Wisbech has to include a visit to one it’s breweries and gardens. Elgood Brewery’s patronage can be seen all over the town in historic buildings and modern-day sponsorships. We parked for free in a car park by the Rugby field, sponsored by Elgood Brewery.

Renowned for its river access which runs right up the middle this town was once a seaside town before the draining of the fens. (Link). Although it lacks currently in modern shops there are plenty of older buildings to admire including some owned by the National Trust. These were closed to inside visitors when we visited in January, I believe they start to open for weekends in February.

Unfortunately, we couldn’t find anywhere to eat in the town dog friendly and very few places with chairs outside. Wisbech does however have an ASDA supermarket and a Morrisons Daily on its outskirts towards the cottage.

Kings Lynn, Norfolk

Kings Lynn, is about 20mins drive from the cabin in the opposite direction to Wisbech. This much larger town is bustling with shops and eateries, both chain and independent. It’s also full of history and beautiful historic buildings.

We managed to find a lovely cafe, Cobbles, on the waterfront which was dog-friendly inside. This cafe is unique in that it serves full afternoon teas upon ordering without pre-booking. Delightful!

The Norfolk Coast

Bit of a further drive but the North Norfolk Coast is accessible if you fancy it. Including the seaside town of Hunstanton.

A 45-minute drive gets you to the classic Norfolk seaside town of Hunstanton. Filled with kiss-me-quick amusements as well as a Sealife centre and plenty of beach space. Other beaches and bays surround the town on either side depending on what you are looking for.

Nature Reserves

There are two RSBP reserves within 20miles of the cabin, the Nene Washes and Snettisham

There are various Wildlife Trust reserves around including Woodwalton Marsh. The cabin is near the boundaries of 3 counties; Norfolk, Cambridgeshire and Lincolnshire.

How do you book a stay in Algwen Cabin?

We booked the cabin via Hoeseasons. Although it also appears on other self-catering cottage sites. For help in booking your perfect trip get in touch via email as I am a trained travel agent, able to assist and book at no cost to you (I make a small commission on your bookings).
